Strengthening Family Connections Program

Our Family Connections Worker provides cultural, social, and emotional support to families whose children are preparing to enter the school district through weekly scheduled play groups located around Surrey. The position also provides outreach support, and cross cultural supports.

Theresa Olson Strengthening Family Connections Facilitator

Theresa’s native name is Swiigan and is both Gitxsan and Carrier from northern BC and belongs to both Fireweed and Bear clans and brings to the agency her teachings.

Theresa has 26 yrs of experience working both in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities with families/children & youth ranging from 0-25yrs facilitating programs.

She started her career as a parent support volunteer at her daughters daycare and then branched further into community service agencies and boards in Golden BC, after moving back to her home territory she worked in her community of Sik-E-Dakh as a Community Facilitator/Youth worker for 6 years while completing her Nechi Training Research & Health Promotions Institute Community Wellness certificate program.

Theresa has then furthered her education with the Provincial Ministry FASD training, to work within the Aboriginal stream as a support worker for Circle 6 Fraser Health in 2007 and recently has now a number of trainings that best support her many roles with our organization. She has been with us now for about 4 years working at Awahsuk Aboriginal Head Start preschool, FRAFCA AECD coordinator and now Strengthening Family Connections Outreach Worker and within our Aboriginal Infant Development.

For 6years she was a Aboriginal foster parent nurturing children in care and is a proud parent to a successful daughter.
Theresa has spent a few years living in Arizona before coming to work with our agency and has a passion for learning and sharing other cultural teachings with our families.
