Clinical Counsellor (Sixties Scoop)

FRAFCA is looking for an experienced and dedicated individual to lead our Sixties Scoop Healing Program. The Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association is a non-profit organization that provides a diverse range of culturally safe and supportive services to Indigenous People residing in the Fraser Region. Program Objective:

To provide culturally sensitive support, education, trauma-informed care, and healing for survivors and families affected by the Sixties Scoop, addressing intergenerational trauma through a blend of Indigenous knowledge and contemporary therapeutic techniques. 

Positions Overview:

As a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) or an individual with equivalent education and experience, you will be responsible for providing counselling services to community members, with a focus on those affected by the 60’s Scoop, both directly and indirectly. You will work closely with Indigenous communities, applying culturally safe practices to ensure the well-being and support of those in need.

  Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Deliver counselling services to Indigenous community members, incorporating a deep understanding of the impacts of intergenerational trauma, specifically related to the 60’s Scoop.
  2. Participate in regular supervision sessions as outlined in your contract, to ensure professional development and maintain high standards of care.
  3. Collaborate with other professionals and stakeholders within the health authority and Indigenous communities to optimize client care.
  4. Develop and implement individualized and group treatment plans that address emotional, mental, and psychological needs, utilizing evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), or Exposure Therapy (training in these areas is considered an asset).
  5. Create and deliver educational materials for clients, families, and healthcare professionals, using effective educational strategies and knowledge translation methods.
  6. Maintain thorough documentation of client sessions and treatment outcomes, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to organizational policies.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must be a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)or possess a combination of education and experience relevant to the position, particularly with a strong background in working with Indigenous communities.
  • Training or experience in CBT, DBT, or Exposure Therapy is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to create educational materials, design education strategies, and translate knowledge into practice, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and access to a vehicle is required, as local travel within the Surrey geographic area may be needed to provide services or attend meetings.

As a valued member of the FRAFCA organization, you are accountable for providing services to the assigned community, both in-office and on Whalley Blvd. You ensure timely, diligent service, maintain accurate session notes, and adhere to FRAFCA’s processes and policies. You possess excellent time management, interpersonal, and communication skills, while maintaining confidentiality and creating safety plans when needed.

You are passionate about growing as a counselor, follow a business casual dress code, and engage in self-care. Working in a team-based environment, you provide clinical and educational support to 60’s scoop survivors, collaborate with other healthcare providers, and promote Indigenous Cultural Safety. You demonstrate leadership, educational strategies, and foster a creative learning environment. Additionally, you excel in communication, planning, organizing, and technology-based skills, promoting evidence-based practice and continuous improvement in care.
