Job Description – Indigenous Addictions Specialist

The Indigenous Addictions Specialist will provide advanced level of specialized expertise in supporting First Nations community development, planning and FRAFCA program delivery in the area of addictions, substance use and prescription drug abuse. The Indigenous Addictions Specialist will develop a network of treatment and support program resources and expertise in collaboration with community, addiction and mental health service providers, Fraser region and other health and social service organizations. You will also develop and deliver culturally relevant, culturally sensitive and appropriate professional training & resources, supporting the implementation of community-based prevention and health promotion programs. This position will report to the Wellness Program Manager at FRAFCA.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

· 1 to 1 counselling sessions to provide treatment centre referrals and to connect and form pathways to healing options. Connect with detox options, find culturally appropriate services and options;

· The AS will conduct comprehensive assessments, develops treatment plans and makes referrals to other programs or agencies as required;

· Provides individual, family and group counselling using therapeutic techniques drawn from theoretical frameworks such as family systems, solutions-focused, narrative and psychodynamic group work;

· Assists clients to live without depending on addictive substances and activities. Teaches and assists clients in developing life skills and community survival skills. Engages clients in acceptable, recreational and social activities in the community;

· Develops and facilitates support groups for clients and/or their families as required;

· Reviews and evaluates client’s progress and adjusts treatment plans as required;

· Provides feedback and support to clients and/or their families;

· Develops and provides prevention and education activities in the community such as workshops, as required;

· Maintains liaison with other agencies, professionals, ministries and the community;

· Maintains client records and provides statistics and reports as required;

· Other duties as required.

Qualifications & Competencies:

· University degree in Public Health, Social Work, Clinical Psychology, Psychiatric Nursing or a closely related behavioral science field

· Eligible to be registered by their respective professional bodies. Knowledge

· In-depth knowledge of theories, practices and principles relative to addictions and mental wellness

· In-depth knowledge of Aboriginal/First Nations mental wellness health system needs

· Excellent knowledge of health and wellness delivery vehicles and models in BC, Canada an internationally, particularly in indigenous mental health and wellness
