Surrey Indigenous Youth Advisory Council Coordinator (SIYAC – Maternity Leave Coverage)

Term:  Fixed-term contract (1 April 2026 – 31 March 2027)

Pay: $27.00 – $28.49 per hour

Expected hours: 35 hours per week, on-site at 14727, 108th ave. Surrey BC.

About the Program:

The Surrey Indigenous Youth Advisory Council (SIYAC) exists to support the leadership, well-being, and civic engagement of urban Indigenous youth in Surrey. Through mentorship, programming, and community collaboration, the program works to create meaningful opportunities for Indigenous youth to connect with culture, develop leadership skills, and contribute to positive change in their communities.

Key objectives of the program include:

  • Strengthen leadership capacity among Indigenous youth through mentorship, skills development, and community engagement opportunities.
  • Create culturally grounded spaces where Indigenous youth feel safe, supported, and empowered to share their voices and experiences.
  • Increase opportunities for Indigenous youth to develop and lead initiatives that reflect their interests, priorities, and community needs.
  • Foster connections between Indigenous youth, Elders, community organizations, and leadership opportunities within Surrey and beyond.
  • Encourage civic participation and advocacy by uplifting the perspectives of Indigenous youth to municipal, provincial, and national spaces.
  • Support youth-led innovation and entrepreneurship, including initiatives such as SIYACreations and other youth-led projects.
  • Promote the spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, and social well-being of Indigenous youth through culturally grounded programming and peer support.

Job Duties & Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and support the Surrey Indigenous Youth Advisory Council (SIYAC) meetings, activities, and initiatives.

  • Support recruitment and engagement of Indigenous youth participants in Surrey.

  • Assist youth in developing and implementing community projects and leadership initiatives.

  • Coordinate youth programming including workshops, cultural learning opportunities, and leadership development.

  • Provide administrative and logistical support for youth council activities, events, and gatherings.

  • Foster safe, inclusive, and culturally grounded spaces for Indigenous youth.

  • Support collaboration between SIYAC, FRAFCA staff, and community partners.

Youth Mentorship and Leadership Support

  • Coordinate and support mentorship hours for youth participating in SIYAC initiatives.

  • Provide guidance and administrative support for youth-led projects and leadership activities.

SIYACreations Social Enterprise

  • Support youth who are leading the bead shop SIYACreations, a youth-led social enterprise.

  • Assist with logistics, coordination, and administrative support required to sustain the enterprise.

  • Support youth in developing skills related to entrepreneurship, collaboration, and project management.

Governance and Advocacy

  • Support the development of a healthy relationship between SIYAC and the FRAFCA Board of Directors through the Youth Representatives position.

  • Provide coordination support for the Youth Representative(s) who sit on the FRAFCA Board and may also represent both FRAFCA and SIYAC at provincial and/or national tables.
  • Support efforts to uplift the priorities and issues facing Indigenous youth in Surrey to municipal, provincial, and national levels of government.
